In 1964 a convent was opened at Retnagiri of Kanakkari village in Kottayam Dt. aiming at a particular apostolate. Rev. Fr. Alexander Neerakkal wanted to start an institute for poor and uneducated women who wanted to be single and lead a pious life. With this aim he entrusted Mother Reetha, the Mother General, with 4.5 acres of land which was in his name at Retnagiri. In 1964 Mother Leo, the then Mother General, started a convent there and slowly began to receive above said type of women. Rev Fr. Alexander Neerakkal took special care in the running of this Institute staying in his own building which was close to this and rendered whatever help was needed. In the beginning the Institute was known as "Karunalayam", but in 1974 it was elaborated and took the name, "Alphonsa Institute". The women here, along with the sisters, participate in prayer and other works.
